Tips from a Stuntman on How to Design a Fight Scene, and how to collaborate well with others! FIGHT SCENE TUTORIALS: • How to film a Fight Scene (Taught by ... (keep reading for more tips)
Remember, if you're collaborating with others on a cool fight scene, you don't want to seem like a control freak! But if you know a thing or two about how to film a fight scene, and have some action filmmaking experience, you WILL have strong opinions on what will work for camera.
The first thing you should do to avoid any conflicts on set on the day, is do your homework! Prep your fight scene ideas and fight scene design as early on as you can (but make sure to leave some "wiggle room" for everyone to feel creative).
There are a couple ways to do this, the best one is to create a PREVIS, which stands for "pre-visualization". You might have seen these in big action movies. This is a powerful tool that the stunt coordinator and fight choreographer use to get their idea across to the director and producers.. and often, it is the thing that the film crew decides to go on! (The last movie I worked on, they recreated the Stunt Coordinator's pre-viz shot by shot).
Another thing you can do is to get a couple reference links together, so you have something to show to the director about the style you want to go for. If you can cut out just the moves you need, and make your own youtube link, even better!
ON THE DAY, if you're worried things aren't going to go smooth: Just take what you know about the basic rules of fight choreography filming, and mention them early on in the day. That way you can bring them back up later and attribute the "bright idea" to your collaborators. I don't see this as manipulation, but rather a VERY powerful tool that all of the best creators and directors use to help everyone around them feel better about themselves, while getting what they want out of the shot (most of the time).
