Perhaps one of Beethoven's most beautiful melodies, the pure lyricism in this extract is a prime example of Beethoven's ability to write long flowing melodies, contrary to the popular belief that he never did. Indeed, Beethoven often worked with small motifs and developed a musical discourse through continuous development but there are plenty of melodies where Beethoven seems to work against his very own modus operandi.
The simple amiability of the second and final movement of Beethoven's op.90 is reminiscent of Mozart's finales while also foreshadowing the clear melodic style of Schubert to come. Indeed the last movement of Schubert's D.959 A major Sonata is a rondo and seems to imitate closely the melodic development of this movement in particular.
