It is normal for children to get ear infections, especially under the age of three but the otitis prone child gets three or more ear infections in six months or four or more in a year. This can become dangerous as there is a small risk of meningitis with ear infections and if the child hasn’t been vaccinated there’s a risk of invasive pneumococcal infections from an ear infection. Persistent fluid in your ears can affect speech and hearing development. If a child becomes otitis prone, they should see an ENT. If tests confirm a Eustachian tube problem, inserted tubes can take the place of a functioning Eustachian tube to ventilate the ear and also allow topical medications. Tubes last about six to eighteen months and the body will push them out and heal the drum behind it. For 85% of children who get a set of tubes, that's the only set of tubes they're going to need.
