Addiction can take hold of anybody’s life, and in very different ways. Some might begin by experimenting, just getting high or having a few drinks on the weekends. Others may be looking for an “escape”, and use drugs or alcohol as a way to hide from or numb negative feelings or some painful trauma from their past. Still others begin down the dark and deadly path of substance abuse in a much more innocent way – by simply following doctor’s orders. One of the fastest growing numbers of cases that our intake coordinators are seeing in recent months are people who are addicted to prescription medications, or who have turned to illicit street drugs when they could no longer get or afford those pharmaceuticals. This is especially true in cases where the prescribed medication is opiate-based painkillers. Too many physicians would rather prescribe a drug to mask a symptom rather than address the cause of that symptom. And, with the rising number of prescriptions for these strong drugs being written every year, this trend does not look like it will be slowing down any time soon.
Christina is a patient at Choices Recovery that falls into that category. After a bike injury 8 years ago, she was following her doctor’s orders and using the pain medication that she had been prescribed. “At first, I took them right, like you are supposed to,” she recalls, “but then I started taking more and more of them, and I was running out. So then I went to heroin.” Once she had made this shift, things really started to go downhill for Christina. Her life had been turned upside down. “I knew that it wasn’t a good lifestyle,” she continued. “Everything was going wrong. My family was getting upset with me, I was lying, I was manipulating – I was becoming a person that I didn’t like at all. So I chose to find a rehab.” The decision to seek help with her addiction came after the hardest part of recovery – realizing and acknowledging that she had a problem.
Christina still has quite the journey ahead of her on the path to recovery from her addiction. Rehabilitation is not a “quick fix” and treatment is not a cure. Rather, it is a way of dealing with the issues that are causing the addictive behaviors, uncovering and addressing those underlying causes in a positive and constructive manner. It is a way to find the skills needed to remain substance-free and to handle the stresses and obstacles of daily life without feeling the need to resort to using drugs or alcohol. “I was really nervous about coming here,” she admits. “It was really hard at first.” After she had made some progress in her program, she sees herself and the world in a whole new light. “I’m not having urges at all anymore,” she says, “and I’m just taking in all the knowledge so that I can use it, because I know that once I leave here it is going to be different. But I have the tools to cope with everyday life on my own.” The treatment program at Choices Recovery is not designed to simply help our patients get clean and sober, it helps them find the tools they need to stay that way.
