Shifting the benchmark from one bank to the other bank of the river causes a difference in the auto level reading due to the greater distance and the correct procedure is to set our auto level on that bank first. We already know the value of the benchmark. For example Benchmark 1 which has an ELISH of 100 and will name it BM A so that we can remember all the readings we take. Now by placing our staff at point A which gave a reading of 3.10 and another reading from the staff placed at point B on the other side of the river took a reading of 3.59 where we want to shift BM2. One bank of the river will shift from point A to point B on the other bank.
