One of the biggest advantages of using digital illustration tools is that they offer the possibility to 'undo' your actions. Simple 'undo' however, works in a very linear way. You can only go back one step at a time. Then comes the notion of non-destructive workflow, which allows designers to jump back to several points of edits and fine-tune them whenever she wants.
Here are some examples:
Layer mask: a layer mask can be added to any layer or folder by clicking on the 'add layer mask' icon. This creates a black and white image added to the side of the layer thumbnail that represents the mask. This mask image allows designers to paint areas to selectively show or hide. White in the mask reveals the corresponding area, and black hides it. Any shades in between add transparency respective to the darkness. You can always come back to the layer mask to adjust it, allowing you to maintain the full image even though you only
Clip layers: layer clipping involves one base layer that defines the visible part and one or more clipped layers that stack on top of the base layer. You can clip two layers by holding alt, and clicking between the two. Similar to layer masks, clipped layers will only be visible where the base layer is.
Smart objects: you can turn any layer into a smart object by right-clicking and choosing 'make into a smart object'. Doing this basically creates an embedded file within your Photoshop file. This means that you can make your transformations, adjustments, and even apply filters, and original information about the image is preserved. You can check the stored image by double clicking on the smart object layer. In addition to preserving the original image, all adjustments made on a smart object stay editable. That means you can change the radius of your gaussian blur, and even change it into a directional blur.
