Paul and Charlie teach us two basic hymn tunes to use in morning and evening prayer.
Especially if you've ever been confused by those weird numbers in your Magnificat subscription or in iBreviary (8.7.8.7. anyone? what?), this will equip you with one more piece you need to chant for yourself.
Come learn to chant at one of our retreats!

00:00 Introduction with Paul and Charlie
00:32 In preparation for Ordinary Time: Two Hymn Tunes for Morning and Evening
00:53 How do you sing the hymn for Lauds and Vespers in the wild?
01:52 Pull out iBreviary
02:35 Let's look at Monday Morning, May 27th
02:56 We've got our hymn for the day "O God of Splendor, Source of Light." NOW WHAT?
03:03 What is 8.8.8.8 aka Long Meter? The "eights" tell us about the syllables.
03:23 Paul's Recommendation for the Morning Hymn Tune (for an 8.8.8.8. song)
03:57 Charlie can chant!! Listen!
04:14 What's up with the 1st and 4th phrase, Charlie? That's right, they're the same.
04:45 The 5th syllable in this tune is a double melisma.
05:30 This tune is approved for morning hymns.
05:56 Let's try this tune on "O God of Splendor, Source of Light."
06:45 Where can we find this tune besides in this video?
07:00 Here's the link: https://gregobase.selapa.net/chant.ph...
07:04 Let's talk about evening prayer.
07:14 Uh Oh. The Evening hymn is 11.11.11.5.
07:50 Use the tune "Flemming" for this. Google it.
08:02 This is not a chant, this is a more modern and Germanic tune. Here's how it sounds.
08:34 Now let's look up an 8.8.8.8. hymn for the evening.
08:43 "To You Before the Close of Light" tune. Link: https://gregobase.selapa.net/chant.ph...
09:00 Pop Quiz Charlie: It's totally syllabic and that means...
09:13 Let's chant it. (Parents: This makes a GREAT lullaby.)
09:51 Let's try another random hymn with our new repertoire.
10:24 "O God Our Firm and Steadfast Strength."
10:57 Another Pop Quiz Charlie: In this tune, what is the same?
11:33 See how the Church makes these prayers 3D when you add the music?
12:32 Pro-tip: If you can remember the tune, go to one you already know.
13:08 But be careful! A tune you know won't always work. An example with "Tantum Ergo."
13:41 Let's try it with "Iesu dulce memoria."
14:49 Add this to your chanting toolbox!
15:17 Updates! Pentecost Vigil, Cranberry Retreat, Boston Retreat!
