This film explores the legacies of Hackney's historical link to transatlantic slavery. It tells the stories of people who were involved in the business of slavery in Hackney as well as those, both in the Caribbean and the UK, who fought to end African enslavement.

The film features archival material, interviews and dramatisation.
It asks:
Who were the slave-owners in Hackney?
How did enslaved Africans fight against enslavement?
How did people in Hackney campaign for abolition?
What are some of the legacies of African enslavement?

The film starts with history students from Bsix College in Hackney discussing the term ‘black’. They address various negative stereotypes associated with this word and how this affects young people from the African diaspora who are growing up in Hackney and other parts of the world today.

The film is divided into four parts:
1 - The Slave-owner of Hackney
2 - Resistance
3 - Hackney and Abolition
4 - Reparations

The teacher’s notes accompanying the film and education resources targeting Key Stage 3 and 4 students can be found here: https://lrgr14.wordpress.com/resource...
