Modern frequency separation is a powerful technique in Photoshop that allows you to retouch and enhance your photos while maintaining natural skin texture. It separates the high-frequency details (such as texture and fine lines) from the low-frequency color and tone information. Here's a step-by-step guide for performing frequency separation in Photoshop:
Step 1: Open Your Image
Open your image in Adobe Photoshop. Ensure that your image is in the RGB color mode, and it's a non-destructive copy of your original image.
Step 2: Duplicate the Image
Duplicate the background layer by right-clicking on it and selecting "Duplicate Layer." Name the duplicate layer "High Frequency."
Step 3: Create Low-Frequency Layer
With the "High Frequency" layer selected, go to the "Image" menu, then "Apply Image." In the "Apply Image" dialog box, set the source to "Background" and blending to "Subtract." Ensure that the "Scale" is set to 2, and the "Offset" is set to 128. This will create a new layer called "Layer 1" with the low-frequency information.
Step 4: Name and Group Layers
Rename "Layer 1" to "Low Frequency" and group it with the "High Frequency" layer. To do this, select both layers and press Ctrl +G (Windows) or Command +G (Mac).
Step 5: Apply a Gaussian Blur (Low-Frequency Layer)
Select the "Low Frequency" layer and go to "Filter" "Blur" "Gaussian Blur." Adjust the Radius until the skin looks smooth but not overly blurred. The exact radius will vary depending on your image, but typically, a radius of 5-10 pixels works well.
Step 6: Work on the High-Frequency Layer
Select the "High Frequency" layer. This layer contains all the high-frequency detail. To make changes, you can use the "Clone Stamp" or "Healing Brush" tools with a soft brush to correct imperfections on the skin while maintaining the underlying texture.
Step 7: Toggle the Frequency Separation Layers
You can toggle the visibility of the "Low Frequency" and "High Frequency" layers to see the impact of your retouching work. Make sure you're working on the "High Frequency" layer when using retouching tools.
Step 8: Merge or Save Layers
When you're satisfied with your retouching, you can either merge the "Low Frequency" and "High Frequency" layers by right-clicking on the group and selecting "Merge Group." Alternatively, you can keep them separate and save your work as a PSD file for future adjustments.
