With UKaid funding, a model community tackles malnutrition in Rubaba Villlage.
In Rubaba Village, Kamwenge District, a model community is taking proactive steps to combat malnutrition. Every month, the village comes together for a Village Health Committee meeting as part of the Primary Health Care and Community Empowerment Initiative (PHCCEI). These meetings, led by the area chairman, ensure children are regularly monitored for nutrition challenges using tools such as MUAC tapes, height boards, and weighing scales provided by @UNICEF , with vital funding from UKaid.
During these gatherings, mothers receive nutritional counselling and are sensitized through engaging performances of music and dance, making education on proper feeding practices both informative and enjoyable.
Village Health Teams (VHTs) play a critical role in this effort. Trained by UNICEF, VHT members are equipped to screen for malnutrition at the community level, refer severe cases to health centers, and educate families on good nutrition practices.
With support from UKaid, UNICEF also facilitated the mass screening of over 50,000 children under five for wasting in Kamwenge, Isingiro, and Kyegegwa districts between January and February 2023. As a result, more than 5,000 children with severe malnutrition were admitted for treatment. By the end of 2023, 477,304 children had been screened at the community level, with over 9,000 children receiving treatment for severe acute malnutrition, achieving a cure rate of 78.2%.
This initiative has also strengthened multisectoral coordination, with District Nutrition Coordination Committees (DNCCs) established in key districts, helping to drive the long-term fight against malnutrition.
This collaborative effort, made possible by UK aid, is transforming communities and building healthier futures for children in Uganda.
