Twiddling toddler
Breastfeeding is a beautiful and intimate experience, providing nourishment, comfort, and bonding. However, as babies grow and develop, they may exhibit behaviors that can be challenging for breastfeeding mothers to navigate. One such behavior is twiddling, where babies/toddlers fiddle with the opposite breast while nursing.
Twiddling typically involves a nursling playing with or twirling the nipple of the opposite breast while breastfeeding. It can be distracting, uncomfortable, or even painful for moms. Babies may twiddle for various reasons:
🫶🏻Exploration and Comfort: Twiddling is often a form of exploration and comfort-seeking behavior for babies. It provides them with sensory stimulation and a sense of security while nursing
👌🏼Stimulation and Relaxation: Some babies twiddle as a way to self-soothe and regulate their emotions. The rhythmic motion and tactile sensation of twiddling may help them feel calm and relaxed during breastfeeding sessions
🤌🏽Flow: some babies learn that when they twiddle milk flow increases as new let downs are triggered
Reduce Twiddling:
☝🏾Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries with your baby/toddler regarding twiddling. Use gentle and age-appropriate language to explain that twiddling can be uncomfortable for mommy and encourage alternative ways for them to self-soothe, such as holding onto a soft toy or blanket.
✌🏿Redirect Attention and provide distraction: Turn your phone off and talk to your baby. Hold their hand and tell them about your day. Redirect your baby’s attention away from twiddling by engaging them in other activities while nursing. Offer them a favorite toy, book, or teething toy to keep their hands and mind occupied. 🤟🏼Changing your position can minimize access to the opposite breast. Side-lying or laid-back breastfeeding positions may help keep the opposite breast out of reach, reducing the likelihood of twiddling.
