Neon Genesis Evangelion presents a controversial figure from Jewish mythology, the rebellious Lilith, as a central character in the story. Of course, Anno’s interpretation strays from the original nature of the mythological Lilith, who was allegedly the first woman, made to be Adam’s equal unlike Eve, who was created from Adam’s rib. Neon Genesis presents Lilith as the Second Angel who arrives on Earth following the arrival of the First Angel Adam, and accidentally takes away Adam’s destiny of being the progenitor of life on the planet.
