As a general rule, each column should have only one type of data in it, and, optimally, each cell should only have one value. If cells/columns have too many contents, you can't easily work with the data in sorting, filtering, or formulas. For example, you can't as easily make a chart of project status if status and date are in one cell together. [Follow along with a copy of the demo sheet and slides below]
If you have more than one item in a cell, you can try Google Sheets Split text to columns tool to automatically split the contents into separate cells.
1) Add extra column(s) to the right of data
2) Highlight data to split
3) Data, Split text to columns
4) Specify separator, and data will split into the columns
