The Kyiv bridgehead, formed during the November offensive operation by the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front, wedged into the location of the German troops, while worsening communications between Army Groups Center and South. The German command sought to restore a full-fledged defensive line along the Dnieper and again capture Kyiv. On November 15, German troops went on the offensive against Kyiv, delivering their main blow along the Zhytomyr highway.
