Last week, the Legion Go got a pretty hefty discount at quite a few retailers (it's since gone back up, but will probably be available cheap again soon since we're getting close to the holiday season). So now I've got one! I've been curious about the Legion Go for some time due to the (for a handheld device) huge screen - which promises to be quite a bit more immersive than the 7" screens on a lot of other PC handhelds.

This hour-long video shows you the unboxing of the device and what it comes with by default. In addition, we do some size comparisons with the competition, take a look around the device, show off Legion Space (the Legion Go's game management software), and do some gameplay and benchmarking. This is an initial impressions video, so once the system is out of the box I haven't done a whole lot of optimizations yet. Performance here is going to be essentially a "stock" Legion Go - take it out of the box, let Windows and Legion Space update their stuff, and "Go". One optimization I did do before the Cyberpunk gameplay is go into BIOS and increase the VRAM from the default 3GB to 6GB. At the default 3GB, Cyberpunk performance was terrible.

There are some things I haven't played around with much yet (like the detachable controller that can double as a mouse), so I'll probably look at those in future, much shorter videos.

There are some timestamps at the bottom so you can skip through the video to see specific things if you like.

Gameplay demo notes below.

Borderlands 3 was playing in Performance mode on the Legion Go. Resolution was 1920x1200 with resolution scale 75%. Low graphics preset (I prioritize framerate for this game if at all possible) and DX11 renderer. No framerate limiter.

Star Ocean was running in Performance mode on the Legion GO. I used PCSX2 nightly build and changed rendering resolution to 3X native but other settings were left as default.

Cyberpunk 2077 was playing in Performance mode and all the other settings were shown in the video - basically using the game's Steam Deck preset. These are the same settings used in my other tests of Cyberpunk, so results should be directly comparable.

Since the Legion Go and the audio input jack on my capture card don't like each other very much, I used USB-C to HDMI instead to record the audio (and the capture card was seen as an extended display). This may have slightly lowered the system's performance during gameplay. I'll try to figure something out for gameplay audio in future videos.
