Ice cream headache is caused by the intake of cold food or liquids. It is one of the most common headaches. Half of young people have this headache, at a higher age it occurs less often. It is far more common than migraine. Ice cream headache is more common in migraine patients and then usually on the same side as migraine headache. Despite all this, ice cream headache has been little studied.
How and why headaches develop has not yet been fully clarified. For many years, it has been suspected that it has to do with the enlargement or contraction of the arteries of the head. However, research in recent years has shown that this view alone is not sufficient to explain headaches. Our lab have been dealing with research of ice cream headache since 2014. Cold liquids are more likely to cause ice cream headache than solid substances. Some subjects have more than one headache attack after intake of cold liquids, others tearing unintentionally. Our studies show an increase in cerebral blood flow due to cooling of the oral cavity. In subjects with ice cream headache, the cerebral blood flow is higher than in subjects without headache. However, not only the cerebral blood flow changes, the heart and respiratory rate slows down and blood pressure rises.
Our results suggest that both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are activated. These correspond to the reactions of living beings during diving. The diving reflex reduces blood flow to arms and legs and redirects blood to the heart and brain. This makes it possible to survive under water for longer (see e.g. diving in newborns). It is conceivable that the increased blood flow to the brain can be used therapeutically in a stroke.
