For many years, glutamine has been considered a "standard" bodybuilding supplement for maximizing gains in size and strength. Lifters will usually use it alongside other staples like creatine, multivitamins and protein powder and consume anywhere from 5-15 grams per day.

But does glutamine work effectively for this purpose? Does glutamine help build muscle?

Although many lifters swear by it, the concrete research on glutamine is pretty clear at this point: it's basically worthless for bodybuilding and fitness purposes. This has been confirmed by quite a few studies now, and I can't see any reason to run out and spend your hard-earned money on a glutamine supplement at this point.

Glutamine does not increase hgh (human growth hormone) to any significant degree, it does not prevent muscle breakdown, it does not enhance immune function, and although it may help to restore glycogen levels post workout, this really isn't a legit concern for bodybuilders anyway.

Although you might have come across another glutamine review praising these supposed glutamine benefits, it's likely been put out by a supplement company or by someone who just doesn't know any better.

In fact, the reality is that most orally consumed glutamine isn't even absorbed by your muscles and is instead converted into glucose anyway! For that reason, supplementing with oral glutamine is no more beneficial than swallowing a teaspoon of sugar.

So, does glutamine work? Is glutamine worth it? Based on the concrete evidence, it's basically a complete waste of money. My suggestion is to save your cash and spend it on things that really matter, like high quality food, your gym membership and a few basic supplements that actually work. Leave the glutamine powder on the shelf as it isn't doing anything other than draining your wallet.
