HISTORY OF OKWA UKWU ,IMAMA AMOLI AS TOLD BY LATE MAZI L.C OSONDU
Okwaukwu Festival is a Rite of Passage, performed every three years to mark the transition from adolescents to manhood for males between the ages of 18 and 21. Okwaukwu is one of the major cultural landmarks in Imama Amoli traditional calendar and a significant process in Imama Amoli.
The history of OKWA UKWU dates back to 1st century AD and can be traced to a man called DOGWO UDEANUGWO UGA.
Dogwo hailed from UMUIGWE- OCHA, Ugwunagbo, Imama Amoli Awgu LGA, Enugu state.
Dogwo was an upright man and an artist by profession ,who specialized in carving of woods.
Dogwo grew up,got married but had no children. His liberal mindedness made him to think of a legacy to be handed over to generations after him.
With this in mind Dogwo carved a very big wooden cup called ,*"Okwa ukwu"* and dedicated it for use by all IMAMA Youths who would be due for ,*INITIATION* into Adulthood otherwise called "UMU- UKE- EKWA" every three years.
Palm-wine drinking according to Dogwo should be done by all Imama male initiates on Eke day a native week after New yam festival.
All Imama initiates are therefore to assembly at his place and drink from the cup in turn on the Eke day starting from members of Dogwo's family.
The idea is for his commemoration and any male born in Imama has automatically become Dogwo's son to make up for his childlessness.
Let us celebrate such a kind and special man for his good thoughts inspite of his childlessness nature.Dogwo lives on.
