Click 'CC' for English and Portuguese subtitles. In this video, I talk about the origins of the word - soccer and football. Socker was actually the first form of the word in the late 19th Century, which developed from an abbreviated form of Association Football. It was common around that time amongst Oxford University students to add -er/-ers to the end of words to make more informal words. For example, rugby became 'rugger' and many people had nicknames with -er/-ers added to their name (Tuffnell - Tuffers).
To differentiate between rugby football clubs, AFC was added to some football clubs (Association Football Clubs). Many countries around the world use the word 'soccer'. This is mainly because they already have a different form of 'football' - American football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, Australian rules football or rugby is often referred to as football.
I have a Facebook group in which I post discussion topics, polls and quizzes to help people practise talking about football in English in a friendly environment. There are football fans from all over the world in the group. / 1196553737193588
