The launchpad that SpaceX describes as its "workhorse" is preparing to take the next step in its evolution. Starting with the CRS-30 mission slated for no earlier than Thursday, March 21, SpaceX will demonstrate its ability to launch its Dragon 2 spacecraft from Space Launch Complex-40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Before now, SpaceX was limited to launching its second-generation Dragon spacecraft from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. But with the certification of its new crew access tower at pad 40, Dragon 2 launches will be able to fly from this pad.

NASA and SpaceX are looking at the first crewed mission, which will launch from this pad. That mission could come as early as late summer when the Crew-9 quartet launches to the International Space Station.
