The Save for Web feature in Photoshop has been available for many years and is still used by professional graphic designers and web developers.
Optimizing your images prior to uploading to your Wordpress (or other website platform) will ensure that:
Your homepage loads fast (10 seconds or less is ideal)
All other Pages load quickly
Images are have appropriate dimensions for their placement
Images are the right format for the right type of image.
