(Tutorial: Beginner Level) Flat design with a cast shadow effect looks awesome and is quite easy to achieve. This mini tutorial shows you how to get this effect using Adobe Illustrator. A text explanation of the tutorial is in this description below.
Explanation of Tutorial in 10 Steps:
1. Create two squares of different colors, a large one and a smaller one.
2. Duplicate the smaller square — you now have two small squares.
3. Create a symbol or character — in the tutorial it's the letter W.
4. Create an outline the symbol or character.
5. Place the symbol or character on a layer between the two smaller squares.
6. Duplicate the symbol or character layer and change its color to match the smaller squares.
7. Change the blend mode of the symbol or character to 'multiply'
8. Go to 'Distort and Transform' then 'Transform' and change the 'move' values to 0.5px for VERTICAL and 0.5px for HORIZONTAL, and make the copies high enough to extend the cast shadow beyond the boundary of the smaller square.
9. Make a clipping mask with the small square on the top most layer, and the symbol or character that has the blend mode applied to it, to constrain the cast shadow within the small square.
10. Move the original symbol or character layer to the very top, and play with its fill and outline colors to achieve the effect you want.
