Do you need a marketing degree?
Hot take on a million $$ question.
Nobody learns marketing in school.
If they say they did, they’d be talking about theory, not the job skills.
Yet marketing programs is one of the top discussion topics asked by aspiring marketers.
I had a world class university education at McGill University and loved every minute of my college years. I then did an MBA which helped me uncover my passion for marketing.
But if you ask me if I’d go to school for marketing, my answer would be no.
I learned the skills to live, explore and question, but not professional skills I’d need to find jobs or use at work. That only happens when you get your hands dirty and start working! That’s also when you figure out what your calling is and what you’re not meant to do.
You don’t learn social media in class, you learn when you use the platforms.
You don’t become a great copywriter in school, you get better when you write thousands of lines of copy.
TL;DR Marketing isn’t something you learn in school so if I knew I wanted to be in marketing, I’d start getting experience asap and skip marketing education.
