While fishing in the mouth of the Columbia River Saturday morning, Warrenton Mayor Henry Balensifer and a fellow fisherman spotted a humpback whale swimming in the river’s brackish waters just east of Buoy 10.
Balensifer said he also saw a small pod of what he thought was porpoises nearby between Buoy 12 and 14, and anchovies on the surface being eaten by seagulls and brown pelicans.
It was the first time the mayor had ever seen a humpback in the Columbia River. In that past, he’d seen killer whales.
Leigh Torres, a marine ecologist with Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute, confirmed the whale was a humpback and said they periodically congregate at the mouth of the Columbia when feeding conditions are good.
