There are some obvious telltale signs that data science isn't for you.
THE MONEY
You probably have seen some statistics from Glass Door or indeed or wherever on how much data scientists make. Some places say $100K starting out! Analysts make over $75K! There are two things to note here. First, these stats are often wrong and misleading. Most of these “average salary” figures are pulled up by people working in high cost of living areas, like NY and LA. And second, they're also pulled up by people with more experience but the same job title. So keep that in mind if you're trying to get into the field for the money, that data scientist salaries are not as high as they might seem.
NATURAL CURIOSITY
Are you naturally curious? You need to be curious because new technologies come along all the time; and in order to stay relevant you need to constantly be learning more and more about them. Your skillset truly has to be constantly expanding if you're going to hack it in this field, so on top of being curious you’ll need a strong work ethic. The second reason you need to be curious is you’re going to need to be a critical thinker. You have to be able to examine problems from different angles and go the extra step to get to the bottom of it.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Now, if you’re still with me this one is what separates the truly successful in this field from the ones barely hanging on. You have to be able to communicate and work with other people, particularly non-technical folks. Data science and analytics sit really close to the business and you're constantly going to be interacting with business analysts, VPs, and higher ups whose sole focus is on driving business outcomes. In fact that’s why these roles pay pretty well, DS and analytics folks drive business outcomes, and so you’re going to need to be able to distill your interpretation of the results from that really cool gradient boosted machine or deep learning algorithm to someone who probably hasn’t taken math since high school, and might have never taken a coding course.
