NEW OBS v23 NVENC!!! - Tutorial & Comparison to x264 Medium
*Note: When describing the "old NVENC" middle-man stuff, in reality its actually like this:
-OBS renders a frame
-OBS transfers that texture from GPU to RAM like it would for any other encoder
-FFmpeg NVENC uploads it to the GPU
-FFmpeg NVENC encodes it
and now current implementation:
-OBS renders a frame
-NVENC encodes it
The point is...WAY less overhead. **

During CES when Nvidia announced the RTX 2060, they also announced work with the OBS Studio development team on optimizing OBS for "broadcast quality production." What they meant was that they were working with OBS on updating & optimizing the NVENC h.264 encoding engine. The old way it worked still put a load on the CPU as it still had to serve as the middle man in the process. The new way it works takes better advantage of the improved chips from generation to generation, and also cuts the CPU out of the process which will reduce overhead on your system and help maintain gaming performance for a smooth stream. And as Nvidia further updates the NVENC chips on their cards, this will also start including visual quality improvements on top of the performance improvements this update lends to all nvidia GPUs that support NVENC (that being the Kepler 600 series and newer). The turing based RTX and GTX cards have an improved NVENC chip, and these optimizations Nvidia have done has them claiming streaming quality similar to x264 medium. That is a big deal and in today's video, we go through getting your OBS set up to take advantage of these new changes as well as compare NVENC to x264 medium using Apex Legends for that comparison.
