Ghazal is a poetic form rather than a musical genre because the text of a Ghazal may be composed in any number of musical styles. It can be sung in a classical format with minimal musical accompaniment or it can be arranged to be sung with an orchestra. The words of many great ghazals have also been used as film songs. It is one of the oldest forms of poetry that is still being written and sung. Its origins are in the Arabic language from where it made its way into Farsi (Persian) and, eventually, to Urdu. A Ghazal consists of rhyming couplets which may or may not be thematically linked. Ghazals usually follow the themes of love and loss and the poetry is always in a male persona, (the devoted lover), writing from his viewpoint and describing the wiles and coquetry of an uncaring female, (the heartless beloved.)
Occasionally, ghazals also follow a theme of an initial hope and joy that comes from a new love, such as this ghazal by the Indian poet Bashir Badr, (born 1935), in which the poet likens his beloved to life itself saying that all his wishes have now been fulfilled and he seeks nothing more from life. He compares himself to a darkened earth and says his beloved is like a moon-lit sky. This ghazal was originally composed and popularised by India’s legendary ghazal singer Jagjit Singh (1941 – 2011).

Singer Kavya Limaye captures the inner mysteries of “Asia Lagta Hai,” one of 12 ghazals (lyric poetry) arranged by violinist Deepak Pandit for this thrilling collaboration with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. Sufiscore is proud to present this video, filmed in historic Budapest, as part of its mission to promote new musical fusions and collaborations across genres and traditions.
