In the basement of a San Francisco hacker house, next to a water heater and a makeshift gym, sits a homemade GPU cluster powering the next frontier in mind-reading technology. Meet Jonathan Xu, co-founder of Alljoined, who's building an ambitious EEG startup with backing from Khosla Ventures and AI legend Jeff Dean.
Armed with consumer-grade brain-scanning headsets and a healthy supply of "brain lube," Xu's team is collecting what they claim is the world's largest dataset matching brain activity to visual stimuli—all in service of decoding your thoughts before you speak them.
The traditional neuroscience establishment has long dismissed EEG as too crude a tool for precise thought detection, but Alljoined is betting that modern AI can extract previously invisible patterns from these electrical signals. Their in-house trials are already showing promise.
The endgame? A future where your "emotional tokens" can be fed directly into AI systems, your thoughts can control devices without physical input, and perhaps even direct brain-to-brain communication becomes possible.
It's both thrilling and unsettling—and perfectly emblematic of San Francisco's current AI obsession, where twenty-somethings are building potential mind-reading technology in residential basements rather than prestigious research labs.
