3ds Max scene files take longer than normal to open (sometimes in excess of 20 minutes). This problem may be compounded when a master scene file is loaded containing Xref scenes, or files from across a network.

Causes:
Includes, but is not limited to:
Number of objects in the scene.
Complexity of each object in the scene.
Outdated graphic drivers.
Opening files from a network location.
Running 3ds Max in a virtual environment.
Scene uses XRefs or networked Xref objects.
Unused animation paths and motion clips.

Download this file, very useful and easy:
Go to the bottom of the website, at the end, a link appears that says:
ATTACHAMENTS: and download the small file that appears, it is called SceneCleaner_Startup.ms;
