Ableton Live 11 has new string and brass sounds (and an upright piano) designed by Spitfire Audio, as separate packs (to purchase) or free with Live Suite. Spitfire asked me to take a look at these sounds and sponsored a short video for their channels, linked to this longer video here. The MPE-capable patches are something I've been eagerly waiting for and so focussed on those. I selected four that you'll hear here. I was thrilled to get so much closer to truly expressive orchestral sounds using Push and a ROLI Lightblock than one ever could using sliders or knobs. Just Polyphonic aftertouch alone is incredible. Slide and pitch are nice too, of course. I've added a subtitle track to share with you some other details and thoughts. I think it's a really valuable addition to Live.

Making the video itself was also a new challenge, one where I wanted to go for a slightly different look than usual, a more natural one. Moreover I wanted to make something positive after all these dark and difficult times. What was interesting for me was this was the last take of many - I wasn't happy with the first 30 or so takes (I know) but I felt "surely I have one by now" and did this last one with the idea to just enjoy it. I then on the spur of the moment decided to improvise the second half, slightly clumsily but with a result that in the end I preferred to the rest. It just goes to show - sometimes we have to just let go, dive into the flow, and trust that something good will come. As a serial perfectionist I am always re-learning this lesson.

About MPE: For clarity, Push doesn't now do everything MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) can do. There are very good explanations of MPE out there, but in brief, it brings per-note pressure, slide and pitch-bend to the table. With the arrival of Live 11, Push 1 and 2 have gained per-note pressure (also known as polyphonic aftertouch) but not slide and pitch-bend, as the hardware isn't capable of that. Slide traditionally allows for a vertical movement on each note and pitch-bend a horizontal one (if we think of a keyboard-style layout, like a ROLI Rise). Push's pads don't have sensors that would allow this, as of today. That all said, the addition of per-note pressure on Push is powerful, and a very welcome step forward. What is important to consider is which controllers allow per-note expression. Traditionally keyboard controllers with aftertouch only transmit "channel aftertouch" meaning that only a single aftertouch message is sent, meaning that the whole sound is affected, and not each individual note. Again, there are better explanations out there: https://www.mpe.design & https://cdm.link/2020/11/live-11-also...

As always, my sincere thanks go most of all to my students/WRKSHPers at @WRKSHP who through their support of my work at the school allow me to make time to make videos like these.
