#ComponentsCloseUp No. 270: Monolithic Video & Radar ADC
-
** Quick Facts! **
Manufacturer: TRW
Part Number: TDC1007
Package Type: 64 Pin Ceramic DIP
-
This long part is a 20MSPS (MegaSamples Per Second) Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) from TRW Inc. If you didn’t know, TRW stands for Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, name for two companies, Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation and Thompson Products after they merged in 1958¹. TRW was a well known name in the aerospace and automotive sectors.
-
As the title states, the TDC1007 was an ADC, and was used in video and radar applications according to the datasheet². This ADC would take in an analog input in the range between VEE to 0.5V (VEE = -7.0V Max.), and output an 8-bit digital signal (-0.5 to +5.5V). The analog input was fed to 255 comparators, with the other leg of the comparator being connected to a large series of resistor divider generated with some external reference voltages.
-
The outputs of the 255 comparators were fed into a 255 to 8 decoder circuit in order to generate an 8-bit signal. These 8 outputs are connected to latches, the outputs of which were controlled by the CONV input pin. The analog input was sampled approximately 10ns after a rising edge signal was applied to the CONV pin, and stored in the output latches on the next subsequent rising edge.
-
One thing that makes this part unique besides its large size is the integrated aluminum heatsink attached to the top of it. According to the datasheet, this part is rated for a rugged range of -55 to 125°C, with a maximum silicon junction temperature of 175°C. It would be interesting to see how hot it would get running at room temperature.
