For a little over a year, I’ve been bringing my sewing machine to the dining table for my daughter to learn and get creative! She is currently four, so I steer away from lessons right now and just focus on her getting comfortable with the machine. Instead of focusing on an end project, I let her sew lines as much as she wants and she loves it and it’s so rewarding to see her beaming with pride! Here are some of my takeaways so far, I’d love to hear your tips:
• Turn the speed down (the most important tip!)
• Put the presser foot where they can reach. We use a high chair or you can put the machine on a kids table to be more accessible.
Remove the threads and let them practice on paper. Be sure to change the needle next time you sew!
Give creative control. This includes allowing the child to cut fabric how they want!
Teach the basics of backstitch, lowering the needle, guiding fabric, removing fabric from the machine, snipping threads.
Don’t focus on making an end result, let them get used to the machine for a while. You’ll be surprised what their imaginations come up with!
Try it out and if you don’t feel like they are ready, try again in a few months :)
Let them sew while sitting on your lap. My favorite is saving projects to hem while we are together so she can help me sew them.
