"Space Baskets" (2022), a work by Rose B. Simpson, was installed at Denning House in March 2024. Simpson's piece is an installation of multicolored papier mâché bowls dyed in earth tones evoking clay, the material for which she is best known. Each basket is marked with a black plus sign, an indigenous symbol related to the guiding light and protection of directional stars. In Pueblo culture, baskets are often given as gifts of gratitude, becoming symbols of generosity and reciprocity when displayed in a recipient’s home.
The arts are an integral component of Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) which strengthens scholars’ ability to lead across disciplines and cultures. Works of art displayed outside and throughout the building prompt scholars to engage with the work of global artists who are making significant impact in the arts. The KHS art committee invites these innovative and distinctive artists to spend time at Denning House in fellowship with scholars.
