So if you asked me before making this video what exactly white balance was, I'd probably tell you something to do with the color.
right?
Kind of. But today I'm going to be telling you exactly what the F*** white balance is.
So what exactly is white balance? To answer that we first need to cover what color temperature is.
First of all, every light source has a color. For example, sunset is warm and golden while a rainy day might be cold and blue. Even the artificial lights in your home have a color temperature to them, some bulbs might be warm and orange while others might be cooler and see more white. This color temperature is measured in Kelvin and ranges between two and ten thousand Kelvin with daylight being at 5500.
As you can imagine, different colors of light dominate in different lighting situations, and there are surfaces all around us that reflect that light. So if you're pointing your camera towards a white surface that is reflecting blue light, your eyes might see it as a white service but your camera still sees it as blue light.
Our eyes seamlessly adapt to the varying colors of light in a process that we don't even realize is happening. While cameras are amazing supercomputers and can probably calculate equations quicker than Einstein could, unfortunately, they cannot replicate eyes and we need to tell them what kind of light they're looking at.
Therefore, we need white balance, and finally, answer your question,
**white balance is the process of balancing the temperature of the colors in your camera so that we can represent light as accurately as it seems in real life.**
In other words, white balance corrects and balances color temperature that results from certain lighting situations. If a scene is too warm your camera will cool down the image and add more blues and if a scene is too cool your camera will warm up the image and add more orange. Pretty cool right?
So back in the day photographers had to measure the white balance and use filters over the lens to compensate for the light. Luckily technology has moved along since then and we're now able to have computers do the work for us. If you're just starting out there's nothing wrong with throwing your camera on to auto white balance. It's actually very good.
If you do want to switch it up though and get more creative flip it on manual so that you can really create moods and tones that you wouldn't be able to get in editing.
In conclusion, I'd say throw your camera into auto white balance and let the computers do the math for you unless you want to take to the next level and create some truly unique looks.
