2019-2023 Ford Ranger 2.3L Bucking/ Surging Possible Fix
A symptom of bucking or surging between 30-50 mph on the 2019-2023 Ford Ranger equipped with the 2.3L is becoming somewhat of a common issue. In this video I give a detailed description of the symptom, the possible cause of the symptom and go over the possible solution for this issue. The symptom is a bucking/ surging sensation while cruising between 30mph and 50mph. The symptom usually occurs with little to no accelerator pedal application, so while trying to maintain a constant speed, not accelerating or deceleration. It almost feels as though the vehicle has a misfire. Sometimes the symptom can be misunderstood as torque converter shutter. The check engine light will usually be off but in some cases the light may illuminate with EGR related codes. The cause of the concern may be due to moisture intrusion into the EGR DPFE sensor. This is the sensor that measures EGR flow. When moisture gets into this sensor it throws the sensor off and possibly causes this concern. What I do to diagnose this issue as being caused by a faulty DPFE sensor is drive the vehicle under the conditions that the symptom occurs while having the EGR valve disabled. Disabling the EGR valve prevents EGR flow. If the symptom is absent while the EGR valve is disabled, however you do that, then the issue is most likely the DPFE sensor and the sensor will need to be replaced. I would also recommend either cleaning the EGR inlet tube out as well or replacing the tube.
