An ISOLATED Lake on the KOSOVO/MONTENEGRO Border

Leqinat Lake is an isolated mountain lake close to the Rugova Canyon and the small village of Kuqishte. It’s a spectacular part of Kosovo with mountains, waterfalls, forest, hiking trails and nature all around. Information was hard to come by but I’d read about this trail and the mystery and isolation of the lake on the Internet, I was joined by Simon from Finland who I had run into earlier in the day (not literally).
We started the hike from a local restaurant and walked up a steep pathway that took us through trees and bushes until we came out at a rocky plateau. I continued on as the path became windy and muddy in places, at this point the steep mountains to my right were breathtaking. After an hour I arrived close to the lake's edge with just a few trees and a bit of undergrowth separating me from the water.
It was an incredibly quiet and peaceful afternoon and the water was clear and still. Large jagged rocks and Evergreen trees surrounded the lake as well as grassy trails that led me around to the other side where I found another pathway heading up to a viewpoint. It was magnificent. Depending on which map you are using, the border between Kosovo and Montenegro actually passes through the lake and so I believe at this point I was actually standing in Montenegro – pretty surreal.
The hike down was equally as dramatic as I got caught out by a savage thunder and lightning storm that passed overhead – very frightening! You really don’t want to be in the forests and mountains while lightning is flashing around you.
Thankfully I made it back to the bottom, a little wetter but certainly pleased to have made it up to the mysterious lake in the mountains of Kosovo.
