PRACTICE THE PROBLEMS
1. A parallel plate capacitor filled with mica having εr = 5 is connected to a 10 V battery. The area of the parallel plate is 6 m2 and separation distance is 6 mm. (a) Find the capacitance and stored charge.
2. An electric heater of resistance 10 Ω connected to 220 V power supply is immersed in the waterof 1 kg. How long the electrical heater has to be switched on to increase its temperature from30°C to 60°C. (The specific heat of water is s = 4200 J kg-1).
3. A coil of a tangent galvanometer of diameter 0.24 m has 100 turns. If the horizontal componentof Earth’s magnetic field is 25 × 10-6 T then calculate the current which gives a deflection of 60o.
4. A closed coil of 40 turns and of area 200 cm2, is rotated in a magnetic field of flux density2 Wb m-2. It rotates from a position where its plane makes an angle of 30o with the field to aposition perpendicular to the field in a time 0.2 sec. Find the magnitude of the emf induced inthe coil due to its rotation.
5. Consider a point charge +q placed at the origin and another point charge -2q placed at adistance of 9 m from the charge +q. Determine the point between the two charges at whichelectric potential is zero.
6. The equation for an alternating current is given by i = 77 sin 314t. Find the peak value, frequency, time period and instantaneous value at t = 2 ms.
7. Two electric bulbs marked 20 W – 220 V and 100 W – 220 V are connected in series to 440 Vsupply. Which bulb will be fused?
8. Two conducting spheres of radius r1 = 8 cm and r2 = 2 cm are separated by a distance much larger than 8 cm and are connected by a thin conducting wire as shown in the figure. A total charge of Q = +100 nC is placed on one of the spheres. After a fraction of a second, the charge Q is redistributed and both the spheres attain electrostatic equilibrium.
9. Compute the intensity of magnetisation of the bar magnet whose mass, magnetic moment anddensity are 200 g, 2 A m2 and 8 g cm-3, respectively.
10. In a meter bridge with a standard resistance of 15 Ω in the right gap, the ratio of balancinglength is 3:2. Find the value of the other resistance.
11. When two objects are rubbed with each other, approximately a charge of 50 nC can be produced in each object. Calculate the number of electrons that must be transferred to produce this charge.
12. Dielectric strength of air is 3 × 106 V m–1. Suppose the radius of a hollow sphere in the Van de Graff generator is R = 0.5 m, calculate the maximum potential difference created by this Van de Graaff generator.
13. A copper wire of cross-sectional area 0.5 mm2 carries a current of 0.2 A. If the free electron density of copper is 8.4 × 1028 m–3 then compute the drift velocity of free electrons.
14. Calculate the equivalent resistance for the circuit which is connected to 24 V battery and also find the potential difference across each resistors in the circuit
15.A coil of a tangent galvanometer of diameter 0.24 m has 100 turns. If the horizontal component of Earth’s magnetic field is 25 × 10–6 T then, calculate the current which gives a deflection of 60o.
