Johnny Gandelsman plays JS Bach's Complete Violin Sonatas & Partitas -
Over the course of four consecutive nights in May of 2023, I had the pleasure of playing JS Bach's complete Sonatas, Partitas and Cello Suites, at The Met Cloisters' beautiful Fuentidueña Chapel. This video captures the first two nights.
As someone who grew up in a family of Classical musicians with high expectations of excellence, I have always been extremely critical of my playing, and normally I would be hesitant about sharing a video that has all the things that can (and did) occur during a live performance: nerves, wrong or out of tune notes, occasional memory slips, etc. I am now trying to turn a corner, and my one New Year's resolution for 2024 was to be a little bit kinder to myself. I'm sharing this video simply as a document of where I was as a musician in 2023. I hope you find something interesting or enjoyable in it; and all the little wrong things that happened will act as a simple proof that the playing was done by a regular human being, and not by AI :)
