Bestiarum Miniatures: Heroes hunting Blood Suckers!
This set of models were just released recently by Bestiarum Miniatures. While the name might not be familiar to you, chances are the work of the sculptor is- especially if you've seen a few of my videos before.
Bestiarum is run by Alexei Popovici, who has done a lot of work with Zealot Miniatures (all those gorgeous Minotaurs and the crazy Demon Lord I'd love to get my hands on), Grimlord Games' Village Attacks board games, as well as various board games with Dark Gates Games.
These models are his original creations though. The idea was to have heroes who could undergo some sort of transformation to power up and defeat their opponents. Our barbarian friend hulks out in true berserker fashion, while our one- armed swordsman friend grows and extra arms and fuses with his blade while he's at it. Fun!
I'm a sucker for transforming heroes. Growing up watching Lou Ferrigno hulk out or playing games like Altered Beast in the arcades, it's always been a gimmick I enjoyed.
Pleasantly there are a few optional bits for both heroes- head and arm swaps for the barbarian and a two armed version of the swordsman. I've got a soft spot for one- armed sworsdmen thanks to Jimmy Wang Yu and Tsui Hark's movies though, so one arm it is.
The monsters are funky. I like funky monsters. I wasn't a big fan of the base design though. They're odd shapes and if you're a stickler for grids and movement rules in games I could see them being problematic. Not to say they can't be rebased though. Plus they come off as minions and are in need of a big bad boss monster. Seems like they're might be a suitable option on the horizon next month!
The only real issue I have is their original size is a bit on the shorter side. It's closer to 28mm than 32mm but that's something easily fixed and can be tailored to your individual preference, much like the bases.
