As we come to the end of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’d like to close with a special video from an inspirational young patient Eleanor and mom, Dawn. Eleanor was diagnosed with pPNET cancer, a rare and malignant form of cancer but has remained positive throughout her journey at our Children's Hospital.
Eleanor told us that cancer awareness is important to her because she believes that education is limited and there can often be a stigma placed around children with cancer.
Eleanor said: “I think people need to be taught more about it, because going out, everyone just stares a little bit too much and sometimes it feels a little bit rude when you catch them staring.”
Eleanor’s mom and dad allowed her to have henna on her head for when she rang the End of Treatment Bell – Dawn explains that the temporary henna art has allowed Eleanor to move away as being perceived as ‘the girl with cancer’ and become ‘the cool girl with henna on her head’. In her spare time, she spends time with her four pet chickens, her hedgehog and younger brother Miles. We’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Eleanor and Dawn for spending some time with us to raise awareness on childhood cancers at our Waterfall House in the Children’s Hospital.
