WebGL (Web Graphics Library) is a new low-level graphics API for JavaScript. By providing only a thin layer between JS and native graphics drivers and hardware, WebGL allows the web to attain higher performance than is possible with CSS, SVG, or Canvas. Inspired by the highly successful OpenGL standard, the WebGL 1.0 specification was released in 2011. It has since gained support on every major browser with broad support across devices, especially mobile. It has been successfully deployed in large web projects like Google Maps. This presentation is a first introduction to WebGL. It will explain basic graphics concepts, show simple examples from scratch, and compare WebGL to the more traditional web graphics technologies. If time allows, it will include a description the WebGL 2.0 additions, and a summary of community frameworks (e.g. Three.js and Babylon.js) available to make WebGL easier. Attendees will benefit from a strong programming background and competency in JS, though they do not need any previous graphics-related experience.
