Catatonia
Catatonia is a complicated neuropsychiatric behavioral illness marked by aberrant movements, immobility, abnormal behaviors, and withdrawal. Catatonia can appear abruptly or gradually, and symptoms might fluctuate or vary over an episode. The disease has long been associated with schizophrenia, however it is more commonly encountered in mood disorders. Catatonic symptoms are currently recognized as general and can appear in a variety of mental, neurological, and physical problems. Catatonia is now a standalone diagnosis, with the name referring to a characteristic of the underlying illness. It has various subtypes, including akinetic catatonia, enthusiastic catatonia, malignant catatonia, and delirious mania. Failure to recognize and treat catatonia can result in poor consequences, including death.
Encephalitis Lethargica
Encephalitis lethargica is an unusual type of encephalitis. Neurologist Constantin von Economo and pathologist Jean-René Cruchet first described "sleeping sickness" or "sleepy sickness" in 1917. The disease damages the brain, causing some people to become paralyzed and silent. Between 1915 and 1926, an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica swept throughout the world. The actual number of people infected is unknown, although it is believed that more than one million people caught the disease during the epidemic, resulting in more than 500,000 deaths. Most survivors never recovered their pre-morbid vitality.
