Can I get a free barcode for my book? | Barcode generator review | Bookow Review | Tec-It Review
In the past on this channel, I’ve talked about whether you need a purchase a barcode for your book, how barcodes are not ISBNs, and whether you should use the free no-price barcode from KDP and IngramSpark. All those videos are linked up here for you to catch up.
So for those who have looked through the information and thought on your strategy and you decide that yes, you would need to bring your own barcode with a price on it, the next question becomes how to get that barcode.
In the U.S., authors can purchase a barcode with the price on it from Bowker, the same service that issues our ISBNs. But for those who want to be economical and save money, or those who aren’t in the U.S there are barcode generator sites that you can use. Today I’m looking at two:
Bookow and Tec-It:
Tec-It: https://barcode.tec-it.com/en/ISBN13
This website offers barcodes for so many different products including the EAN ISBN 13 barcodes for books. But I can’t put a price on it at all. So if my strategy required a price on my barcode this one wouldn’t work and if I didn’t need the price I would just use the KDP or IngramSpark barcodes instead.

This website also provides the KDP print template as well as barcodes.
They have really specific instructions for the price depending on the country/currency so that is great. And you get to pick the resolution for the image file which is great.
Generating the barcode is FREE! Asks for a donation. In the US, barcodes are $25 from Bowker if you want the price on it. KDP and IngramSpark provide free barcodes at no cost, but no price on it. So if you donate up to $24 after getting your barcodes from Bookow, you still come out ahead.
So I think Bookow is the better barcode generator for authors who don’t have access to Bowker or are looking to save some money on their barcodes that have the price on it.
