In this video I solder components to a development board that I designed for the IS31FL3236A LED driver. The PCBs were printed and generously sponsored by PCBWay.
The IS31FL3236A has a total of 36 outputs for driving LEDs, and can drive a maximum of 38mA on each LED. The purpose of this board was so that I could evaluate the part to make sure it would work as I expected it to. I have plans to use this for a lot of upcoming projects and I wanted to be 100% confident it would work before proceeding on those. So far, everything looks good and I will move forward with this part, or perhaps even the next gen part in this series, the IS31FL3237 (which is footprint compatible but has many improvements).
To solder the IS31FL3236A, I used solderpaste and hot air from a hot air rework station. For the other SMD components, I used the "dual-iron" soldering method where you use two irons at the same time. I could have been better prepared to demo this process with the proper tips, but it is what it is.
After soldering, I connected the finished device to a breadboard and hooked up an Arduino Nano to it. The manufacturer of this device had an Arduino sketch for the 3237 part, but all I had to do was change the registers to get the code to work with the 3236A.
Be sure to stay tuned for videos of the future projects!
