Julian Sparber and Jonas Dreßler are working on improving notifications, both in terms of platform APIs and user interface. As part of this Julian is implementing grouping notifications by app in GNOME Shell.

Notifications are grouped by app, and threads are combined into single bubbles. There's also explicit expanding/collapsing in the popover to show the full content and reveal actions.
