OpenAI's Sora text video creation tool was used to create a one-minute video of Toys "R" Us founder Charles Lazarus as a young man.
Toys "R" Us, an American toy and children's products brand, showcased the video at the 2024 Cannes Lions Festival in France last week. The video was created by the company's Creative Studio department in conjunction with creative company Native Foreign - one of the units that OpenAI allowed early access to Sora.
In the video, Charles Lazarus, founder of Toys "R" Us, plays the role of the visionary who transformed toy stores, with the help of Geoffrey the Giraffe - a character who came to him in his dreams.
Sora plays the main role, the filmmaking team only used some visual effects, increased or decreased speed and added music. Kim Miller, chief marketing officer at Toys "R" Us, told CNN that the idea was born when she joined a brand storytelling group, which wanted to do something "fun and different."
"Everything you see is created with descriptive text. The representation of how the character looks, what they wear, their emotions, the setting... is seamlessly combined. The team has made tweaks to produce the final video," Miller said.
On social networks, the video received mixed reactions. Some called it a "fascinating look at the future of cinema". However, others rated it as "scary" because the work of video makers will soon be affected.
Sora was released by OpenAI in February but limited to a small group of content creators for testing. This model allows creating one-minute videos using commands. Mira Murati, CTO OpenAI said the product will be commercialized soon this year.
In April, OpenAI also released a music video (MV) made by Sora for the song Worldweight by artist August Kamp. This is considered the first MV created entirely by AI.
