Motoki's colleague, friend and business partner, Dr. Nina Bürklin, generously joined the 1st International IKIGAI Summit to speak about the intersection of IKIGAI Psychology, developed by Mieko Kamiya, and Logotherapy, founded by Viktor E. Frankl.
Mieko Kamiya distinguished in IKIGAI between the source of one's IKIGAI and the feeling of IKIGAI - she called it IKIGAI-kan and referred directly to Viktor Frankl's sense of meaning.
The concept of Ikigai originates from the #heian period (794-1185) in Japan, a time of peace and cultural development. The term Ikigai combines "iki" (life) and "gai" (value or worth), meaning "that which makes life worth living." Despite evolving interpretations over centuries, the essence of Ikigai—related to life's meaning—remains integral to Japanese culture. This philosophy emphasizes self-realization and spiritual fulfillment, potentially contributing to the longevity observed in Japanese populations.

Mieko Kamiya's Contributions to Ikigai
Mieko Kamiya's work in the 1970s, particularly during her time treating patients at Nagashima Asien, delves into the true roots of Ikigai. Kamiya described Ikigai as an individualized concept, manifesting in experiences, roles, memories, or significant others that impart meaning to life. Ikigai-kan refers to the emotional state of life satisfaction felt when actively engaging with one's Ikigai source.
Psychological and Philosophical Insights
Mieko Kamiya highlighted that Ikigai must be lived in the 'here and now,' tied to resilience, with a view toward a better future. This approach aligns with Viktor Frankl's existential analysis, which stresses the importance of finding meaning even in suffering. Frankl's experiences in concentration camps shaped his belief that individuals can endure any hardship if they perceive a future purpose.
Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy and Ikigai
Frankl's Logotherapy, centered on finding life's meaning, shares parallels with Ikigai. He emphasized the importance of personal freedom and responsibility, suggesting that true freedom comes from choosing one's response to life’s challenges. Frankl identified three main categories of values: creative, experiential, and attitudinal, which help individuals find meaning and, consequently, their Ikigai.
Seven Dimensions of Ikigai
Mieko Kamiya identified seven dimensions crucial to achieving the state of Ikigai-kan:
Meaning & Value: Found through introspection and embracing one's experiences.
Freedom: The ability to follow inner needs and live authentically.
Change & Growth: Personal development through experiences and challenges.
Self-realization: Understanding and actualizing one's true self.
Life Satisfaction: Appreciating what one has and living in the moment.
Resonance: Fostering meaningful relationships that contribute to personal growth.
Good Future: Maintaining a hopeful outlook and striving for a better future.
These dimensions echo elements found in Frankl's theories and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, highlighting the universal quest for a meaningful life.
