Hemoglobin A1c or HbA1c also known as glycated hemoglobin, glycosylated hemoglobin, HbA1c, A1C, or Hb1c is a form of hemoglobin used to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged periods of time and is a measure of the average level of glucose to which it has been exposed during its life-cycle. Glucose molecules react with hemoglobin of the red blood cell forming glycated hemoglobin which remains that way during its lifespan. The HbA1c level is proportional to average blood glucose concentration over the previous four weeks to three months and a high HbA1c represents poor glucose control. The criterion for diagnosis of diabetes as per the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes is HbA1c ≥ 6.5%.
