In the heart of Munsiyari - a Himalayan village in Uttarakhand, the forest is much more than boulder and foliage. It is a fiery spirit that courses through its women, an unstoppable force that bends a hostile landscape to the will of a determined sisterhood.
When a colonial law annexed all of India’s forest lands and turned its inhabitants into thieves and encroachers overnight, a groundswell movement erupted in protest, culminating in the community-driven custodianship widely known as Van Panchayats - forest councils of the people, by the people and for the people.
Held back for centuries by gendered orthodoxy and caste divisions, the women of Munsiyari now lead the movement, turning into formidable chowkidars who patrol, preserve and protect their natural inheritance - the forest they consider their maika or natal home.
