There have been a lot of talks about a 2020 IPO for Airbnb coming down the pipeline. As many of you know, 2020 is also shaping up to be a pretty rough year for Airbnb so far. Tourism is at an all-time low, and the market as a whole is in a wee bit of a downward spiral right now.
So what does that mean for Airbnb’s future and their expected IPO? That’s the topic of today’s video!

So, what’s going to happen? Will this be the death of Airbnb?
Unlikely. Airbnb is still a solid business with tons of users all over the world and good profitability considering their growth. Tourism isn’t going anywhere long-term, and nothing has changed with Airbnb’s fundamental business model, so it’s unlikely that any impact from what’s going on in the world right now will last long-term.
Some hosts will be deterred and leave the platform out of fear (fair enough) and other hosts will join and take their place. Ultimately tourism will bounce back and with time, things will return back to normal. This will undoubtedly delay Airbnb’s IPO, which is likely going to cost them quite a bit, however this won’t be the end. We can expect Airbnb to IPO sometime later this year, or more likely some time in 2021.
As for the tourism industry as a whole, this will certainly cause a lot of discomfort as it already has, but it’s once again unlikely that the impact will last much more than 6-24 months. Certainly a number of companies whose stocks have plummeted recently (Hilton, Marriott, Carnival Cruise Lines, and basically every airline in existence) will rally back to where they once were because again, the underlying company has not changed.
The real question in all of this isn’t whether or not Airbnb will survive or whether or not the tourism industry will bounce back. The real question is what should we as individuals do in the meantime, and how can we potentially take advantage of a hidden opportunity here.
If you’re currently hosting or managing properties on Airbnb, the best thing to do is stay calm, conserve your cash, and focus ON the business. Work on improving your skills, learning, and becoming a better host. If you’ve got the stomach for it, you may also consider investing in some of the companies that have been hit hard and are now effectively “on sale” for 30-70% off of their fair market price.
